Cindy explores how the brain influences productivity and outlines evidence-based lifestyle changes that can be implemented daily. Cindy (Cynthia) McDowell is a current PhD candidate and a researcher, data scientist, and professional speaker whose work focuses on brain health, healthy aging, and dementia prevention through modifiable lifestyle factors. Cindy helps audiences understand brain and cognitive health in ways that are accessible, practical, and deeply relevant to day-to-day well-being.
After studying Psychology and Behavioural Neuroscience at Simon Fraser University, Cindy completed her Master of Science in Psychology at the University of Victoria, where she is currently a PhD Candidate in Experimental Psychology. She works as a researcher and data scientist with the Brain Aging and Neurocognitive Lab, where her work examines risk and protective factors for healthy and pathological aging, with particular emphasis on dementia prediction, prevention, and the social determinants of health. Cindy has spoken to employees and leaders across a range of sectors and industries including finance, education, technology, and non profits. She is passionate about making brain and cognitive science accessible in ways that help people take a more proactive role in their health, while also challenging outdated ideas about cognitive health and aging. Her work has been recognized with a doctoral research fellowship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and by being named one of Canada’s 2023 Women Leaders in Digital Health. In addition to publishing peer-reviewed research and presenting nationally and internationally, she has contributed to interviews, collaborative blogs, podcasts and community-based projects to support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. Outside of work, Cindy can often be found reading, playing soccer, or spending time outdoors camping, hiking, or kayaking.
